Optimizing Public Transit through Mobile Devices

Public transit has been plagued with negative stigma over the past few decades, largely being seen as the ‘poor man’s vehicle’ or for those not economically capable of owning a personal automobile.  However, Generation Y has begun to shed some of these less than desirable connotations.  Generation Yer’s are notoriously socially conscious, re-evaluating past norms as champions for a greater good and are embracing alternative modes of transportation in an effort to protect the environment.  Young people, ages 18-34, are not only driving less than the average American adult but less than all previous generations.  The beauty is, these are the same individuals who are smartphone obsessed, with more than 80% owning at least one.  With that in mind, transportation authority’s looking to increase ridership should recognize the value in mobile app development to appeal to an increasingly younger, and overall digitally-hungry audience.

The Power of Push Messaging to Increase Customer Engagement

Companies are now realizing just how potent push notifications can be.  No longer is there a necessity for communication to reside solely within app.  Push messaging allows businesses to engage a target audience with specials, news, offers, or any other relevant note desired, directly to the home screens of app users.  After downloading an application, users simply decide whether or not to opt-in to receiving messages, with a simple swipe of a finger.  If they opt-in, you have their attention.  The true beauty is that once opted-in, you have round the clock access to your audience.  Just because you have 24/7 access, however, does not mean 2am messages is advised.  The key is to provide both entertainment and utility in order for continued opt-in.  It is said that companies who regularly utilize push notifications see engagement rise anywhere from 30-60%.
