Optimizing Public Transit through Mobile Devices

Public transit has been plagued with negative stigma over the past few decades, largely being seen as the ‘poor man’s vehicle’ or for those not economically capable of owning a personal automobile.  However, Generation Y has begun to shed some of these less than desirable connotations.  Generation Yer’s are notoriously socially conscious, re-evaluating past norms as champions for a greater good and are embracing alternative modes of transportation in an effort to protect the environment.  Young people, ages 18-34, are not only driving less than the average American adult but less than all previous generations.  The beauty is, these are the same individuals who are smartphone obsessed, with more than 80% owning at least one.  With that in mind, transportation authority’s looking to increase ridership should recognize the value in mobile app development to appeal to an increasingly younger, and overall digitally-hungry audience.

Whole Foods Jumping on the Mobile POS Train

A year and a half after the implementation of Square payment solutions in Starbucks locations nationwide, Whole Foods is partnering with Square marking another major retailer to go digital. Whole Foods will be utilizing Squares newest mobile payment solution, Stand, a standalone iPad mobile POS system for its in-store venues. This will include all sandwich counters, juice and coffee bars, as well as beer and wine bars within Whole Foods locations.

Starbucks Surges with Mobile Payments

During a conference call with the WSJ on July 25th, 2013, Starbucks revealed just how successful mobile payment adoption has been among its customers in US locations since its roll-out in November of 2012.  Starbucks currently offers 2 methods for mobile purchases, both utilizing barcode scanning technology implemented through cloud based wallet-free features. Customers can pay either with their Starbucks card stored digitally in their handy Starbucks app, or through Square mobile wallet technology which allows mobile purchases via stored credit and debit cards in App.  Starbucks partnered with Square in an effort to increase both revenue potential by accepting wallet-free payments as well as to add convenience for its customer base and it looks like they are succeeding.
